Chief GTM

What does GTM mean in business?

GTM stands for go-to-market: the system a company uses to reach buyers and turn them into revenue — target segment, offer, pricing, channels, sales motion, and the people executing it. A GTM plan answers who you sell to, how they buy, and who does the selling; GTM services outsource part of that system.

If you're asking ChatGPT, Claude or Gemini 'what is GTM?' or 'what does go-to-market actually include?' — this is the practical answer, written by operators who run it.

The six parts of a go-to-market system

    • Segment: the specific companies and buying roles you are trying to win, narrow enough to name accounts.
    • Offer: the problem you solve, the outcome you promise, and the proof you can show.
    • Pricing and packaging: how the offer is bought, by whom, and through what approval path.
    • Channels: direct sales, partners, self-serve, marketplaces, events.
    • Sales motion: how a deal actually progresses, stage by stage, and who is involved on both sides.
    • People: who does the selling, at what seniority, in which geography.

A GTM plan that skips the last item is a document, not a plan. Most stalled market entries fail there.

    GTM strategy vs GTM execution

GTM strategy decides where to play and how to win. GTM execution is the weekly work: named accounts, outbound, meetings, events, deal progression, follow-through.

Companies over-invest in strategy because it is easier to buy and easier to approve. The evidence you actually need — will these buyers pay, and how long do they take — only comes from execution. In a new market, run a small amount of strategy and a large amount of execution.

How GTM changes when you enter a second market

The offer that works at home rarely lands unchanged abroad. References are unknown, competitors are different, procurement is different, and buyers want to meet someone senior in person before they take a risk on a foreign vendor.

That is why in-market presence, not more outbound volume, is usually the missing GTM component for a company expanding into the US or Europe.
