Why Nordic SaaS companies stall in the US, and how to get your first 10 US customers

Nordic SaaS companies usually stall in the US because they sell the way that worked at home: modest claims, long consensus-driven evaluations and remote demos. US buyers expect confident ROI framing, a local person they can meet, and a fast path to a decision. Getting the first 10 US customers is mostly a presence and positioning problem, not a product problem.

    What problem are you facing?

Strong home-market traction, but US pipeline stays thin after a year of trying.

    • “We get polite US demos, then nothing happens.”
    • “Our Nordic references mean nothing to US buyers.”
    • “Nobody on the team is awake when US prospects reply.”
    • “We can't tell if the US is a real market for us or just a distraction.”
    • “Hiring a US VP of Sales feels like a $300k bet we can't afford to lose.”

    Why does it happen?

Why do US buyers go quiet after a good demo?

Because nobody local is driving the next step.

US deals move when a seller sets a clear mutual plan, names the economic buyer and follows up within hours. Remote teams in Helsinki or Stockholm reply the next morning, and the deal loses momentum.

Why don't Nordic case studies land?

US buyers want proof from companies they recognise, at their scale.

A Finnish retailer reference rarely moves a US mid-market CFO. Early US deals have to be won on a sharp ROI story and personal credibility, then turned into US references fast.

Why is the US sales cycle different?

Fewer stakeholders, faster decisions, but higher expectations of the seller.

US mid-market buyers often decide in 30–90 days, but they expect assertive positioning, clear pricing in USD and a vendor who will be around for the long run.

    Does time zone really matter?

Yes. A 7–10 hour gap kills response speed.

Inbound leads and follow-ups need same-day replies. Without someone in a US time zone, the first meeting is often the last one.

    What is the 90-day playbook?

    Phase 1

What should the first 30 days focus on?

One segment, one city cluster and 50 named accounts.

    • Pick one US segment where you already have the strongest home-market proof.
    • Build a list of 50 named accounts and map 3 decision-makers in each.
    • Rewrite the pitch for US buyers: outcome in dollars, in one sentence.
    • Price in USD with a simple annual plan; drop complex per-seat tiers.

    Phase 2

How should outreach work in days 30–60?

    Multi-channel, warm-first, and anchored to in-person meetings.

    • Ask your investors, board and Nordic customers with US offices for introductions.
    • Run a short email and LinkedIn sequence that proposes an in-person coffee or office visit.
    • Pick 1–2 US trade shows or conferences in your segment and book meetings before you arrive.
    • Use the Nordic innovation network (e.g. Business Finland, Nordic Innovation House) for event access.

    Phase 3

What closes deals in days 60–90?

Mutual action plans and a person in the room.

    • Agree a written mutual plan with each qualified buyer.
    • Offer a paid pilot with clear success criteria instead of a free trial.
    • Turn your first 2–3 US customers into references and short case studies.
    • Decide based on real pipeline data whether to hire a full-time US seller.
